History of Folkston

The founding of Folkston traces back to the necessity for a railway station by the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railroad. Initially called “the station,” it later evolved into the vibrant city we know today. Charlton County welcomed its first train in 1881, marking a pivotal moment in its history.

Apart from its rich history and the popular Folkston Funnel Platform, Folkston is also renowned for the breathtaking Okefenokee Swamp, attracting numerous visitors each year. With two cozy bed and breakfasts, motels, and a variety of restaurants, accommodations and dining options abound. Nature lovers can explore campgrounds, while adventure seekers can enjoy activities like sporting clays and other recreational sites nearby. Folkston offers a little something for everyone!

Roadmaster’s Lodge

Roadmaster’s Lodge was originally constructed in the late 1800s and served as the office for the Roadmaster of the railroad in the Folkston area. The Roadmaster’s office was located where the Folkston Post Office is now, on Main Street along the railroad tracks. The office became obsolete in the mid 1900’s. The Lewis family obtained the building and restored it for the pleasure and enjoyment of train watchers visiting Folkston. They want to provide comfortable accommodations while allowing their customers to appreciate some of the Railroad history of the area.
The Inn At Folkston

This deluxe bed and breakfast is perfect place to stay when visiting town! As you arrive, you’re immediately greeted by innkeepers, Ted & Alease, who make you feel as if you’re right at home. You can choose from one of their four themed rooms and enjoy the warm friendly atmosphere of a bed and breakfast and the security of a private home. The innkeepers encourage you to explore the surrounding two acres of Inn property and Verandah during your stay. Their breakfast consists of coffee, orange juice, a hearty serving of fresh seasonal fruit, and a main course that includes “chicken George’s” fresh eggs, bacon or locally made “Wainwright’ ‘sausage and breads.
